For they sow the wind…

… and they shall reap the whirlwind.

Here’s something to ponder.  I have heard this principle laid out by more than one author, Carl G. Jung and Thomas Merton among them.

Everything that takes place in subjective intimacy will one day become objective reality.  It is the magical law of history that the subjective at some time becomes objective, that the aspirations, thoughts and feelings of today become the events of history tomorrow. “For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. ” (Hosea 8:7)

  1. This is true but it does not mean a zero tolerance policy to any mistakes that we make or towards our shortcomings. Our choice, repeated over and over again, to make a new beginning, “exactly where you are” (as poet Malcolm Guite puts it) and under the mercy of God, is the fundamental inner disposition.

    1. Yes, quite so. And while Hosea’s thrust is definitely a warning, the contemplative monastic tradition of the West surely bears out the conviction that the principle works both ways. I guess what strikes me is that we tend to forget how much impact our inner life has on the larger picture, and how much responsibility we therefore carry, each and every one of us.
