Here’s a tried and true old-timer.
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup corn starch
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 2 3/4 cups whole milk
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
In a saucepan, stir together sugar, cocoa, corn starch and salt. Place over medium heat and stir in milk. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a metal spoon.
Remove from heat, stir in butter and vanilla. Let cool briefly and serve warm with whipped topping, or chill in the fridge until serving.
