Readers of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis surely have come across Pauline Baynes’ illustrations. Here is one that caught my eye outside of her work for authors of fantasy:
Quite obviously, it shows an illustration of St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day was earlier this month on October 4th. Mrs. Baynes did this illustration for a card published by Christian Action, London.
Pauline Baynes (9 September 1922 – 1 August 2008) was an English illustrator and author. She contributed drawings and paintings to more than two hundred books, mostly in the children’s genre.
I find her picture of St. Francis delightful, and of course, the wolf of Gubbio features prominently. Joy, Simplicity and Mercy. What else is needed?
